By staff reporter - 14 /10/11Siobhan is to headline the Irish and Country night on Friday 4 November, which pays tribute to Bob's Irish link to the Clancy Brothers and his Country back catalogue. Siobhan has already shared the stage with Bob Dylan himself and famous Irish artists such as The Chieftains. The talented singer songwriter said about her appearance at the festival “I am sooo looking forward to playing at DylanFest… I've been a Bob fan since my teens and even tried to sneak up to see him at Slane when I was 13. My Father caught me… I've been singing his songs since then and have never tired of it.
“He has been a massive influence on my life and my music. He as far as I can see has no rules when it comes to song-writing and I have taken that to heart which is a great license for creativity. Also I've never been to Manchester and i'm dying to experience it.The event is just one of 120 events taking place during Levenshulme Festival, which with over 45 venues staging events over 17 days is one of Europe's biggest community festivals. The two week festival runs from Friday 21 October to Sunday 6 November in South Manchester and is expected to attract over 10,000 visitors. The Bob Dylan Festival takes place during the last weekend of the festival on Friday 4 November and Saturday 5 November in the upstairs newly refurbished acoustic room of M19bar. It features acts from all over the UK and Ireland paying tribute to the hero of Acoustic music that is Bob Dylan.
The festival is one of only seven Bob Dylan Festivals in the world, the other events are held in California and Michigan in America, Berlin in Germany, Melbourne in Australia, Moville in Ireland and North Italy.
http://www.theirishworld.com/article.asp?SubSection_Id=11&Article_Id=20608

SIOBHÁN O'BRIEN HOTPRESS CD REVIEW

Siobhan O’Brien

Shades of Stevie Nicks on the latest offering from this Irish songstress.

Edwin McFee, 25 Aug 2011

HOT PRESS CD REVIEW

Siobhán O'Brien at Salute Him When His Birthday Comes Times a changin and Stop Cryin'

<div style="border-bottom: medium none; writer Limerick Post .ie
2010/07/08

On the banks of the River Shannon at the falls of Doonass, a scene of some of the most destructive flooding last November, Siobhan O’Brien’s voice rang out over the Clonlara fields singing “Come gather ’round people, Wherever you roam, And admit that the waters, Around you have grown” from Bob Dylan’s ‘The times they are a changing’ proving the relevance of Dylan’s lyrics whether taken metaphorically or literally to the times we live in today. Bobfest is a small scale one day event that celebrates the work of Bob Dylan, held this year on the grounds of The Anglers Rest Bar. Siobhan O’Brien’s appearance sets the tone for the night with a very smokey/bluesy version of ‘I’ll be your baby tonight’ and accompanied by Eamonn Hehir also on guitar delights the gathering crowd with ‘Shelter from the Storm’, ‘It’s all over now baby blue’ and other early gems from the Dylan songbook that were not to feature in the mans own gig in Thomond Park the following night. The festival now in it’s second year will hopefully be back again in twelve months.

Limerick's Special Olympics 2010

I'm just in the door from the 3rd and final night of 'Limerick's Special Olympics 2010. All tired out 'N Happy it all went so well. I was running the Music Marquee for Athlete Entertainment. It was a 60 X20 metre Marquee different types of entertainment laid on especially for the Athletes as they wound down after their triumphant days of competing in all their various sports. We had medals galore.
Thursday 10th June we had a Local cover band The Funk Junkies and were as they say Funky... Then we had One of Limerick's up and coming original bands Supermodel Twins who went down a storm, They had to do an encore , the WE WANT MORE just kept getting louder until they did.
Friday 11th June saw another local bnand Acoustra, great musicians, a rock band with a very loud button acordian as a front man.. Great stuff. Then came the LIMERICK GOSPEL CHOIR who couldn't do enough to get the athlete's involved. Very positive vibes coming from all and sundry. Then we finished off the night with Planxty O'Rourke, a traditional band with 8 little tiny bopper Irish dancers.. strutting their stuff..
The last night Sat 12th June started with a bang as 3 piece local Rock outfit Zenith stormed through the first quarter of the show.. We were starting to regret not getting Crowd barriers.. The enthusiasim was overflowing. Next we had the Bolly Dancers, fabulous colourful Indian dancers. Spirited energy transcended to the athletes. Promptly after Elizyka took to the stage with their African Gospel Soul Music.. A Treat.. and we had to finish with a disco which could've gone on all night. Our DJ for teh night was JJ Hartigan who did a wonderful job getting in everybody's requests and co ordinating the biggest 'venga bus'?? ever.. maybe we think.. It'll go up on you tube tomorrow hopefully...

SIOBHAN O'BRIEN JOINS THE SAN DIEGO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA MARCH 2010

IRELAND'S SIOBHAN O'BRIEN JOINS THE SAN DIEGO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA FOR SPECIAL ST. On Songs I Grew Up To, the Limerick singer crosses the spectrum of pop, rock, folk and traditional music to present a nice blend of songs that are done well.
O’Brien is the owner of a strong voice and a good sensibility for song selection. Her presentation of The Lakes of Ponchartrain is one of the best I have ever heard from anyone. The Chieftains’ Paddy Moloney’s backing on uilleann pipes gives the song a bit more poignancy than normal. The L & N Don’t Stop Here No More is an Appalachian tinged, bluegrass-based song that features O’Brien and Sara Petite in a grand duet. Moloney reappears on The Long Black Veil, and his playing pushes O’Brien’s signing to reach to its most soulful. The Fox is a traditional song that gets a good presentation here.
O’Brien has surrounded herself with a number of O’Briens on this recording with backing vocals. She also uses the talents of Paul Kelly on fiddle and mandolin, Martin O’Malley on guitar and banjo, and Declan Aungier on button box. The talent helps to keep this album centred, but O’Brien, with just her voice and guitar, might have been able to do the same.
The album is on the folksy side of music, but it is a cleverly arranged and produced, clever in its placement of songs, not in artifice. O’Brien’s Songs I Grew Up To might make many wish to go back to their youth.Brian Witt

Clive Barnes - Ghost Country Lp
Siobhán O'Brien does backing vocals on five songs. This collection shimmers through the low-key yet sympathetic arrangements of songs borrowed from her childhood, her beloved Radio Luxembourg and her family get-togethers. Her uncle, Brendan Bowyer, lends unbelievably delicate vocals to O'Brien's reading of Scarlet Ribbons, a song rooted in the past that somehow transgresses the chasms of the decades with the fleetest of footfalls. Paddy Moloney of The Chieftains adds suitably haunting pipes and whistles to The Long Black Veil, a song to which he's no stranger himself. A sweet, ultimately satisfying snapshot of a singer still building her identity through a repertoire that stretches from the grindingly familiar (Lakes Of Pontchartrain) to the unapologetically fresh faced (In My Room).

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://siobhan-obrien.blogspot.com/2008/07/siobhn-obrien-cd-review-on-songs-i-grew.html' title='SIOBHÁN O'BRIEN cd review on "Songs I Grew Up to" The mini- theatre at the rear of the pub has staged some of Ireland's great acts. Stars like Sharon Shannon, Paddy Casey and Glen Hansard have recently played great nights in MacCarthy's. The cosy theatre holds in both the music and the atmosphere, as the musicians play away in the midst of the crowd. It is a truly special experience.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://siobhan-obrien.blogspot.com/2008/06/siobhn-o-brien-performing-at-mccarthys.html' title='Siobhán O' What lifts her apart from the trillion Vega acolytes is a razor sharp sense of tunnel vision coupled with a compelling stage presence. That is just one side of Ms. O'Brien's output - the other is this project Songs I Grew Up To. Consisting of material common to the American folk revival of the late '50s, 60s and 70s and gleaned from her familial record collections this is homage to Americana from a cosmopolitan Irish viewpoint. In essence it resembles the best elements f a rough cross between an Alan Lomax collection and Bowie's Pin Ups where songs almost considered beyond standards are revitalised. Take All My Trials for example, here rendered as a simple evocative homage to freedom from social oppression, her pure voice recalls Joan Baez but with an extra bittersweet tinge. The Fox known from Burl Ives and schooldays songbooks is reinvigorated with Pete Cummins' Dylan like backing vocals and Paddy Moloney's pipes and whistle light up the Long Black Veil. However while big honchos make guest slots teh main game is Siobhán O'Brien's doing - hers is a rich supple voice honed from years of practise and she knows her traditional ballads too offering a delicious resetting of the Lakes of Ponchartrain. Using her characteristic taste and experience SONGS I GREW UP TO offers a role model inhow to honour the daunting Americana songbook yet imprint ones own personality on such a project. This is quite a challenging dare and to Ms. O'Brien's credit she pulls it off admirably. The results are powerfully moving and make Songs I Grew Up To quite an event in the process.

Click on photo for larger view
Back tray of Siobhán O’Brien's Cd
"SONGS I GREW UP TO"
A story about Bob Dylan and Siobhán O’Brien

Purchase this CD - Songs I Grew Up To -CLICK HERE
http://www.myspace.com/siobhnobriensongsigrewupto

To Visit Siobhán O’Brien's Website -CLICK HERE
http://www.siobhanobrien.com/index.html

Damien Dempsey & Guest Singer & Songwriter ~ Siobhán O’Brien will perform June 12th at Kavanagh's,Portlaoise,Co.Laois

Damien Dempsey with Guest Siobhán O’ Brien
will perform at Kavanagh’s (The Wren's Nest)
Main Street. Now when I saw the title of this album and the image of O'Brien as a child which adorns the cover I'll admit that I was terrified of what awful abominations might lie within. But when all is said and done, this is a beautifully sung and performed collection. Traditional songs like "All My Trials" and "The Lakes of Ponchartrain" have been done many times before, but there's a great tremolo in O'Brien's voice which lets them live anew (she's a little like Karen Carpenter with a Backbone) and the understated production and expert musical performances (featuring the likes of Paddy Moloney from The Chieftains) means that she takes few wrong turns. Even when she covers the Beach Boys, Harry Chapin or Bob Dylan, she doesn't go wrong. Why? It's just great stuff really.
Key Track: The Lakes of Ponchartrain.

Siobhán O’Brien's Piano photo by Metta Myers c2008 Ireland

Article By HOT PRESS writer
PATRICK FREYNE

Siobhán O'Brien's Cd Launch at Dolan's Warehouse ~ Photos by Dolf Patijn

DigitalDolf Photography

Dolf Patijn ~ Is a Dutch photographer living in the south-west of Ireland . & The Crane (Galway)...

You don't initially get the beautiful feeling when you drive into Westport, it's lovely and picturesque 'n all but it's not till you converse with the natives and soak up the Matt Molloy staff banter that you get that feeling.. what was it ... haven't had it in ages... ooh yea .. respect!! A wholesome understanding of what Musicians try to do on a daily underpaid basis.. It was support..
Don't you just love the warmth?? Thank you to Matt & Gerladine and the staff of Matt Molloy's, We felt very welcome and had a great little gig in the Yard Bar.
We went on to Galway the next day and played the Crane on Sea Rd. Again Mick Crehan 'gets it', 'the struggle', it just makes it all the more worthwhile when people reach out and extend support, A lot of my old friends from Galway turned up and even familiar faces I had forgotten about, There was even people who remembered me as Lily Tumbleweed.. Ah yea it's true, I lived in Galway 18 years ago and went under the name Lily Tumbleweed.. a very obvious penchant for Westerns.. still do. But I'm just realising now, I must have been well known.. not bad for a 19 year old Little Red Hen.. singing her songs on the streets of Galway.. I loved it then and I still love it now.. It's not the same but it still has something.. that forever summer feeling. Ah Bless Galway!!
Thanks to everybody who turned out for all the gigs on this tour. It's much appreciated. Sharon Shannon. O'Brien has also opened for Christy Moore and Donovan....
About Colin Irwin~ He was an assistant editor of
Melody Maker in the 1970s and 1980s, before leaving in the summer of 1987 as the magazine moved in a different direction, and editor of Number One magazine in the late 1980s and early 1990s

Books written by Colin Irvin available on Amazon.com
* In Search of the Craic: One Man's Pub Crawl Through Irish Music (2004)
* In Search of Albion: From Cornwall to Cumbria - A Ride Through England's Hidden Soul (2005)
* Legendary Sessions: Bob Dylan: Highway 61 Revisited (2007)

About the book In Search of Craic:
There's nothing quite like hearing Irish music in Ireland. Not on big concert halls or grand arenas, but in the small pubs in remote areas where the locals habitually gravitate for those informal sessions that invariably develop into a serious social occasion universally known as the craic. For those who play it, it's not a style of music, but a way of life, producing its own culture and characters. After 25 years visiting Ireland both as a music writer and a tourist, Colin Irwin goes in search of the craic. He talks to some of the leading Irish musicians like Christy Moore, Donal Lunny, Paddy Moloney, Martin Hayes, Andy Irvine, Cara Dillon, Paul Brady and Frankie Gavin about their experiences and they direct him to places where the craic is mightiest. This is the story of his journey into Ireland's musical soul and the extraordinary characters he meets along the way.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://siobhan-obrien.blogspot.com/2008/05/siobhn-obrien-in-book-called-in-search.html' title='Siobhán O'Brien in book called " At 69, Paddy Moloney is still the world’s foremost uilleann-pipes player. He started playing at 10, around Dublin. In 1962 he co-founded the Chieftains, who would spread traditional Celtic music throughout the world. They’ve released 45 albums — the latest a two-CD compilation called The Essential Chieftains — and won six Grammys, an Emmy, and an Oscar, They’ve played with Mick Jagger, Paul McCartney, Van Morrison, Sting, Stevie Wonder, Elvis Costello, the Corrs, Marianne Faithfull, Bonnie Raitt, Lyle Lovett, and the Boston Pops, to name a few. I caught up with Moloney — the remaining original — on the phone from Princeton, New Jersey, where the band had just played the 12th date of a 17-date US tour.

So, you’re playing Boston on March 14, right around St. Patrick’s Day. This is not a shock.
I think 1975 was when we first played in Boston, and we’re 46 years together now as the band. To come to Symphony Hall again, there’s magic about that place. This year, it’s a big show. It’s not just the four old Chieftains bashing away anymore.

It’s called “The Celtic-Scottish Connection Tour”?
We’re going down the road this time with the Scottish. Alyth McCormack comes from one of the islands off the West Coast of Scotland [Lewis] and sings in Scots Gaelic and English. She’s with two great musicians, Brian Mcalpine and Jonny Hardie, who play fiddle, accordion, guitar, and keyboards. They’re on stage from the word go, right at the top of the show. We have a guest singer nobody’s ever heard, Siobhán O’Brien. She has a magic voice. We lost our dear friend [harpist] Ding Dong [Derek] Bell five years ago, and this lovely girl Tríona Marshall has come in and gone through the roof. We’ve been having the time of our life on this tour.
You’ve become the international ambassadors of Irish traditional music. Did you ever envision that?
No, that first album we made in ’62, you might say was a one-off. We never expected this to happen. But I did have that dream. I said there was something there for this music, that I wanted to put it on a major stage throughout the world. We desired something bigger and better than music that people play in pubs. Radio programmers like the late John Peel used to play the odd track from the Chieftains in with the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, and he just loved what we did. And Melody Maker voted us group of the year in ’75. That kind of attention we were getting, I thought we were all going mad.

People’s perceptions have changed since you began. What you do is hip.
Back home in Ireland, there’s this whole trend of musicians playing [traditional] instruments. It’s “cool,” whereas when we were going around in those early days with a fiddle or pipes under your arm, you’d get a slagging from your mates. Now, they’re all looking for tickets for your concerts.

The Chieftains have become known for multiple collaborations, with rockers and artists of all generations.
We’ve been asked to do something in a respectful way; it wasn’t rock and roll. What they loved about us was the sound we created. These brilliant artists, we ask them to come to our party and perform our music.

Yet you’ve certainly had an influence on Celtic rock and roll. Consider the Pogues.
I remember one time in London various people like Roger Daltrey came in to do an evening with us. For our penance, the Pogues came and we sat on stage and the whole stage at the Brixton Academy was bouncing. It was a stand-up gig for 4000 people. The Pogues, that was rough-and-ready time. We did a 45-minute set, they did a 45-minute set, then we got together and it was hilarious, that’s all I can say. An experience. I wouldn’t want to do it any other night. I’m a devil for punishment, let’s put it that way. I’m pretty particular about not drinking before the concert, but the Pogues used to nip off to their little bar side-stage.

Siobhán O'Brien finds her own voice ...Boston Globe Interview March 14, 2008

"The Ides of March Are Upon Us".....Siobhán’s debut at Symphony Hall with The Chieftains on the Eve of The Ides of March ~

Siobhán O'Brien finds her own voice with a new CD of cover songs By Linda Laban, Globe Correspondent March 14, 2008 Boston Globe

When Siobhán O'Brien heard that the Frames frontman Glen Hansard had won the Oscar last month for best song for "Falling Slowly," his duet with Markéta Irglová from the film "Once," she was so happy for him that she cried. Her father told her he had heard the company that makes the guitar Hansard favors had seen him playing his battered old instrument at the awards show and offered him a new one."I was going, 'Don't take the guitar, don't take the guitar,' " O'Brien recalls from her home in Limerick. She got her wish. Her father said Hansard had declined."That's Glen. I knew he wouldn't take the guitar," says the Irish singer-songwriter. O'Brien seems to need her heroes unsullied and intact; she isn't into the "glitz and the glamour" of success: "I just love doing this," she says of making music.O'Brien met Hansard 15 years ago when they bonded over a mutual love of Bob Dylan. Around the time, Dylan had invited O'Brien, a plucky girl with a strong, delicately tremulous voice, to sing his song "The Fox" onstage in Dublin with him. That song is just one of many covers - from Harry Chapin's "Shooting Star" to Brian Wilson's "In My Room" - that O'Brien recently recorded for her self-released covers record,"Songs I Grew Up To.""I never in my life thought I'd do a covers album. Writing was such a huge part of who I was and who I wanted to be seen as. The letting go had to happen," O'Brien says. "I realized I was limiting myself. Most people would be like, 'You have a great voice,' and I'd be like, 'OK, whatever. What about the songwriting'. " She growls the words as if through gritted teeth. "I was probably ignoring what I can do best."Tonight at Symphony Hall, O'Brien will sing some of those cover songs when she appears as a guest of the Chieftains. Tomorrow she headlines the considerably more intimate Midway Café , with her friend and producer Martin O'Malley backing her on guitar. It was O'Malley who was instrumental in O'Brien's "letting go," when he tinkered with some cover songs she had recorded at his studio as a gift for her aunt."Martin had put all this lovely guitar and double bass behind them. I was like, 'Oh, my god!' I didn't even know if I wanted to sound like that. It sounded so nice; I didn't know if it was still me. Did I want to go this way?" she says. But she went with it and recorded more songs, inviting more musicians to add parts. One of them, Pete Cummins, asked his friend, The Chieftain's Uilleann Pipes player Paddy Moloney, to play. Moloney says he was astonished when he heard O'Brien's voice on tape."I was blown away. I thought she's brilliant, you know? I can't understand why she's not at the top," Moloney says. "Maybe she didn't want it? I don't know the full story, but she has a beautiful voice. When you have a voice like that, you should get on with it."Siobhán O’Brien Symphony Hall Boston Mass USAphoto by Metta Myers ©2008 all rights reservedO'Brien's back story includes ties to one of Ireland's biggest pop stars: Her uncle Brendan Bowyer was a show-band superstar in the 1960s before relocating to Las Vegas to become a successful performer there. Over the years, O'Brien has performed as far and wide as the late Tir Na Nog in Somerville and, in 1999, Austin's South by Southwest music conference. She's certainly no shy retiring type and has sought out many of her heroes along the way (on Dylan: "Basically, I ambushed him outside his hotel," she says semi-apologetically).As Moloney puts it, after she tracked him down in Dublin to thank him for working on her record,"She comes right out with it."O'Brien recalls Moloney asking her when she was in America next. She casually replied, "Oh, well, I fly into Boston on the 12th of March. He said, 'Oh we're there on the 14th; do you want to do a song with us?' " "I want to work with great artists. It doesn't matter what genre, just great people and great musicians," she explains. That, she now realizes, includes singing their songs. "It's all about the unity," she says. "Music's such a powerful thing. It reaches out and grabs people, and they don't really have any say in it." © Copyright 2008 The New York Times Company
